The Trinity
The Three Persons
Isaiah 9:6
For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given;
And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called
Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
NKJV
First, let us consider the three Persons of the Trinity.
God the Father is generally thought of as the "head," for this is the picture formed by the title "Father." Indeed, Jesus frequently refers to God as "Father," although the concept of God being the Father of Messiah is seen in the Old Testament as well.
Psalm 89:26 He shall cry to Me, &You are my Father, My God, and the rock of my salvation.& NKJV
The Old Testament distinction normally is made through the use of the names Elohim, Yahweh (Jehovah), and the Spirit. Generally, in New Testament terms, Elohim is God the Father, Yahweh is Jesus, the Son, and the Spirit remains the Spirit.
The Old Testament makes clear
the concept of there being One Father --
Malachi 2:10 Have we not all one Father? Has not
one God created us? Why do we deal treacherously with one another By profaning
the covenant of the fathers? NKJV
The Jews carry forth this concept
into the New Testament.
John 8:41 [Jesus says] "You do the deeds of
your father." Then they said to Him, "We were not born of fornication;
we have one Father-God." NKJV
But, Jesus Himself also recognizes
God as the Father --
Mark 14:36 And He said, "Abba, Father, all things
are possible for You. Take this cup away from Me; nevertheless, not what
I will, but what You will." NKJV
John 20:17 Jesus said to her, "Do not cling to Me,
for I have not yet ascended to My Father; but go to My brethren and say
to them, &I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and
your God.& " NKJV
So, let us look individually at the Three Persons of the Trinity. First, we will consider God the Father.
