Be A Witness
Be A Witness
John 1:7
This man came for a witness, to bear witness of
the Light, that all through him might believe.
NKJV
You are now a Christian. You want to become a better disciple of Jesus. What do you do?
Many churches offer training classes for members. One such might be, Discovering Church Membership, a new members class. Then, after joining, there might be a Discovering Spiritual Growth and a Discovering My Ministry. The idea is to learn how to become a better Christian and then apply your Christianity in some type of church ministry.
The Discovering Spiritual Maturity class mihgt cover four main topics - Spending Time in God's Word, Prayer, Fellowship, and Stewardship. These are all-important and are the foundation of growth in Christ. But, there are other concerns. Some of these are taught as part of the Discovering My Ministry class, while others flow throughout the entire "curriculum" of the Church. One of the ministries of all Christians is that of being a witness to Jesus.
The Holy Spirit grants to every Christian one or more spiritual gifts (1 Cor 12:11). These gifts are to be used for the furtherance of God's kingdom and the unity of the church (1 Cor 12:7). But, to every Christian, Jesus has issued two commands - to love and to witness.
>John 13:34 (NKJV)
A new commandment I give to you, that you love
one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.
Matthew 28:19 (NKJV)
Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy
Spirit,
Mark 16:15 (NKJV)
And He said to them, "Go into all the world and
preach the gospel to every creature.
Luke 24:46-48 (NKJV)
46 Then
He said to them, "Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for
the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, 47
and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in
His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 And you
are witnesses of these things.
John 15:27 (NKJV)
27 And
you also will bear witness, because you have been with Me from the beginning.
Acts 1:8 (NKJV)
8 But
you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and
you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria,
and to the end of the earth."
The question we must address, then, is what does it mean to be a witness?
