God's Attributes

Holiness

Isaiah 6:3
And they were calling to one another: “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.”
NIV

Holiness is moral purity -- absolute purity. It means the absence of all sin and darkness. This is one of the reasons God is light. It is because He is morally pure, that is, holy. This is absolute integrity. God is pure light.

1 John 1:5
This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. NIV

Stated in a negative fashion, holiness is that perfect attribute of God that totally separates Him from all that is evil and defiling and common. God is free from any impurity or evil of any kind whatsoever.

Exodus 15:11 11
“Who among the gods is like you, O LORD? Who is like you— majestic in holiness, awesome in glory, working wonders? NIV

Psalm 99:8-9
8 O LORD our God, you answered them; you were to Israel a forgiving God, though you punished their misdeeds. 9 Exalt the LORD our God and worship at his holy mountain, for the LORD our God is holy. NIV

Revelation 15:4
Who will not fear you, O Lord, and bring glory to your name? For you alone are holy. All nations will come and worship before you, for your righteous acts have been revealed. NIV

Isaiah 57:15
For this is what the high and lofty One says— he who lives forever, whose name is holy: “I live in a high and holy place, but also with him who is contrite and lowly in spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly and to revive the heart of the contrite." NIV

The direction to us is to avoid all sin and unclean things as well -- to be holy

2 Corinthians 6:17
“Therefore come out from them and be separate, says the Lord. Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you.” NIV
1 Peter 1:15-16
But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; 16 for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.” NIV
