Fish

Matthew 4:19
Then He said to them, "Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men."
NKJV

ichthus or fish in Greek

The fish has long been the symbol of Christianity. One reason is certainly the concept that Christians become fishers of men. The picture of evangelism as a fishing expedition in which the Christian worker casts forth his nets into the sea of mankind is vivid. As the net is drawn tight, many are won for Christ.

But, there is a second, more basic reason for the use of the fish. The Greek word is shown in the fish picture above and transliterates into "ichthus." To the early Christians this became not only a symbol of who they were to be, but also an acronym of their Savior.

Each letter of the Greek word for fish is the first letter of the statement of who Christ truly is. Consider:

  •   I i-- is the first letter of the Greek for for Jesus
  •  CH ch -- is the first letter of the Greek for Christ
  •  TH th -- is the first letter of the Greek for God
  •  U u -- is the first letter of the Greek for Son
  •  S s -- is the first letter of the Greek for Savior

Fish in the Greek means JESUS CHRIST, GOD'S SON, SAVIOR.
